How Do You Play FreeCell Solitaire?

If you are new to this version of the game, you might be wondering, how do you play freecell solitaire? While it looks similar to other card games, the "free cells" add a unique layer of strategy.

FreeCell Solitaire Rules

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. The cards are dealt face-up into eight columns, known as the tableau. No cards are dealt face down. This means you can see exactly where every card in the deck is placed.

  • The Goal: To win the game, move all 52 cards to the four Foundation piles in the upper right corner. Each Foundation pile must start with an Ace and build up by suit (Ace, 2, 3, and so on, all the way to King).
  • The Free Cells: In the upper left corner, there are four "free cells." You can store any single card from the tableau in an empty free cell to move it out of the way. Think of these as your temporary storage units.
  • Building the Tableau: You can move cards within the tableau columns by placing them in descending order and by alternating the red and black suits. For example, a red 6 card (hearts or diamonds) can only be placed on a black 7 card (spades or clubs).
  • Moving Stacks: You can move a sequence of cards as a group only if you have enough empty free cells or empty columns to "hop" them over. The fewer free cells and open columns you have, the fewer cards you can move in one go.

When you become familiar with these freecell solitaire rules, you’ll realize that the game is less about the luck of the draw and more about how cleverly you use those four empty spaces.

A Brief History of FreeCell

FreeCell is derived from card games like “Eight Off” and "Baker’s Game”, which date back to at least the mid-1900s. The modern game FreeCell was created by Paul Alfille in 1978. It was Alfille’s version of the game that inspired all of the games you’ll find on this page. He wrote the first computerized version for the PLATO educational computer system.

However, FreeCell remained a relatively obscure game until the 1990s, when Microsoft included it in the Windows 95 operating system. This suddenly made FreeCell one of the most-played computer games in the world. It remains popular today, in part because so very few rounds of the game are impossible to solve, making it a greatly enjoyable brain-training challenge.
