How to Play Ludo: The Rules

If you’re new to the table or just need a quick refresher, you might be wondering: how do you play Ludo? The basic rules are pretty simple, making it easy for new players of all ages to learn in minutes.

Traditionally, a Ludo board features a cross-shaped track. This is the part where the main action takes place. In each of the four corners of the board, you’ll see a colored quadrants: Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue. Each player chooses a color and receives four matching tokens. Everyone’s tokens start the game on the four positions that match their color.

Roll the dice to move all four of your tokens onto the board. From there, the aim is to move clockwise around the entire track and safely reach the "Home" zone at the center of the board. On the way to the finish, you can strike other players’ tokens from the board, forcing them to return to their corner and start their journey over.

To play the game strategically and beat your opponents to the finish, it pays to understand the core Ludo board game rules:

• Starting the Game: To move a token out of your starting base and onto the cross-shaped track, you must roll a 6. If you don't roll a 6, your turn passes to the next player.
• The Journey: Once you have one or more tokens on the board, roll the dice and choose one token to move along the track. The pips on the die determine how many steps you can move forward.
• Magic 6: Rolling a 6 grants you a bonus turn! You can choose to move a new token to the board, or take six steps with a token already on the board, and then roll the dice again.  
• Hampering Opponents: If your token lands on a space currently occupied by an opponent's token, you "capture" their piece. Their token is sent all the way back to their starting base, and they’ll have to roll a 6 again to bring it back into play.
• Safe Zones: Some spaces on the board are safe zones. Tokens standing on these spaces can’t be knocked off the track. Safe zones are usually marked with a star, or will match your token's color.
• Reaching Home: To win, your tokens must make a complete lap around the board and enter the home runway. In most versions of the game, a token can only enter the final Home zone by rolling the exact number of spaces needed to land on it perfectly. The first player to bring all four tokens to the Home zone wins the game!
   

Knowing how to play Ludo is only half the battle; the rest comes down to balancing risk while keeping an eye on all four tokens at once. Try to determine when to play it safe, and when to move aggressively against your opponents.

What is the Ludo Board Game? Origin & Meaning

The Ludo board game has a long and rich history. The game’s roots stretch back to India, to an ancient cross-and circle game called Pachisi. This game originated at least 2000 years ago, and is described in an ancient Sanskrit epic poem. There is also historical evidence of even older ancestors of this game, dating all the way back to the Iron Age! 

Pachisi was traditionally played on an embroidered cloth board, with cowrie shells instead of dice. Six or seven shells were thrown, and the count of shells landing with the opening up determined the number of spaces a player could move.

In 1896, the game was modified and patented in England Alfred Coller. The rules were made more simple so that it can also be played by younger children and can be enjoyed as a family game. Coller named his version of the game Ludo, a word from the Latin language that means "I play”.

Online Ludo and other digital board games became enormously popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing people to play together despite social distancing and lockdowns.
