What are multiplayer games?

Multiplayer games are games in which more than one player can play in the same environment at the same time. This allows players to compete against one another, or work together to reach a common goal.

In other words, multiplayer titles offer players a way to connect with other people and share a gaming experience. The reach may differ, however, depending on the type of game. Some games allow you to connect with players across long distances via the internet. Other games allow you to play with friends and family locally.

What is the difference between local multiplayer and online multiplayer games?

Online multiplayer games connect players via the internet. People can play together even if they're on the other side of the world. You can play with strangers, or set up a 'room' and invite only your friends. Just as long as everyone can connect to the internet.

Our local multiplayer games are by and large keyboard-sharing games. Players use the same computer to play together. By sharing the keyboard, one player can control one character, for example, by using the arrow keys. The other player can then control a second character with the WASD keys.

Web browser and cross-platform MMO games

MMO games (and MMORPGs) are a popular genre of multiplayer games. MMO stands for massively multiplayer online (and RPG stands for role-playing game). These often feature expansive open world for players to roam around in and explore. The world-building and stories in these games often centre on mythology, fantasy, or space exploration.

MMOs often encourage a strong sense of community. People can compete with each other, but they also share tips and strategies, form teams, and chat. Special events and competitions tend to make the gameplay even more dynamic.
