How to play sudoku games

Don't let the numbers fool you! Sudoku is not a math game, but rather a game of logic and pattern recognition. It’s not a difficult game to learn to play: the rules are fairly simple and intuitive.

The Core Objective

The puzzle is played on a 9x9 grid. This grid is divided into nine smaller 3x3 boxes (or sub-grids). The objective is to fill the entire 9x9 grid with numbers from 1 to 9. You must place the numbers in the grid in such a way that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains each number exactly once.

The Rules

  1. Each Row: Every horizontal row must contain the numbers 1 through 9. Each number must be present, and no repetitions are allowed.
  2. Each Column: Every vertical column must contain the numbers 1 through 9, with no repetitions.
  3. Each Sub-grid: Each of the nine 3x3 blocks must contain the numbers 1 through 9 with no repetitions.

These rules allow you to solve each puzzle through a process of elimination. By looking at the numbers already placed on the board, you can rule out numbers that can no longer occur in that row, column, or block. Keep going until you can work out which number is the only one that can be placed in each specific cell.

Taking Notes

You can use the note taking feature (often represented by a button with a pencil on it) to note down ‘candidate numbers’. That’s to say, numbers that could be the right solution. As you continue to work through the puzzle, you can cross-check and remove these one by one until you find the solution.

When you’ve solved a cell, switch back to the answer mode. (Usually by tapping either the pen icon, or by tapping the pencil button again to switch the note-taking mode off). When you fill in your answer, don’t forget to update the candidate numbers you’ve filled in. Faulty pencilled notes are one of the most common mistakes that lead to getting stuck and having to start over.

Common Sudoku Mistakes

Here are some more common mistakes that players make in sudoku. If you’re aware of these pitfalls, you can easily avoid them:

  • Guessing - Sudoku puzzles are designed so that you can always solve them with logic alone. When you rely on a guess here and there, the error might not be evident at first… but it can lead to a disastrous chain of mistakes later in the puzzle.
  • Tunnel vision - Don’t get too fixated on solving one particular cell. You might be overlooking easier moves that can help you fill in more of the puzzle. For example, rows, columns, or 3x3 boxes that are almost full can yield great clues.
  • Missing hidden pairs - If you’re focusing too hard on one cell that’s proving hard to solve, here’s another feature you might be overlooking: pairs of two cells that can only contain two numbers. Spotting these often allows you to eliminate candidate numbers in other cells that make up the same row, column, or 3x3 box.
  • Overmarking your puzzle - Filling in too many candidate numbers and, as mentioned earlier, not updating them as you go along, can make your puzzle cluttered and your notes unreliable. Avoid confusion by keeping your pencil markings organized!
