A brief history of Fashion Games

Dress up and fashion video games have existed as a computer game genre since the 1990s. Many of these games were inspired by paper dolls, which have been commercially sold since at least the 1700s.

A paper doll was a cut out figure, often showing a child, an elegant woman, or a celebrity in under clothing or a simple dress. You could collect sheets of paper with colorful items of clothing - beautiful dresses, items of evening wear, work clothing, and so forth. 

You would carefully cut these out, and place them onto your doll. Each item of clothing had several paper tabs around the edges, which you could fold around the doll to hold the outfit in place.

The early fashion games often worked a lot like paper dolls. But instead of carefully having to cut out the clothes, you could simply drag and drop them to your character, where they would snap into place.

Later games also allowed you to customize more aspects of your model, such as her hair, eyes, and skin tone. These days, most fashion games include options to change your model’s make-up and appearance to match the look you want to create.
