What is an MMO game?

MMO or MMOG stands for massively multiplayer online game. In these games, hundreds - even thousands - of player can all explore the same virtual world together at the same time. Players can interact, working together to form teams, fight monsters, and complete quests. You can also compete against each other for rewards or to top the rankings.

MMO games span lots of different themes and genres, like sci-fi, fantasy, and empire building. There are also different types of MMO gameplay.

Browser MMORPG Games

For example, MMORPG games (massively multiplayer online role-playing games). Here, players focus on creating and levelling up characters and story-based quests. You can find several free MMORPG games in our collection.

Another example are, MMORTS games (real-time strategy). In these games, players focus on building armies and battling other military forces. You can find some MMO nation builder sims in our collection of Multiplayer Strategy games, for example.

Online MMO FPS games

In these games, many players engage in team-based or solo first-person shooter combat. These games are skill-based, though collecting good armor and weapons can make up for lack of experience. You can explore our FPS games page for more. The games with the orange multiplayer icon in the corner feature gameplay with multiple players.

A Brief History of MMO Games

Today's MMO games descend from MUDs, which stands for 'Multi-User Dungeon'. The first MUD was created in 1978, by two students at the University of Essex, Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle. They used their university network to allow multiple players to explore the same dungeon at once.

What were MUDs like to play?

The Essex MUD and other MUD clones that followed looked very different from modern MMOs though. For one thing, they were text-based games. If you've ever played an adventure book, you'll get the picture: Everything - the rooms, the monsters, the actions you can take - is described in words. There were no graphics or animations. You play by typing commands. For instance, when you encounter a dragon, you can then write a command like "Attack dragon" or "Run away".

From MUD to MMO

Though visually very different, MUDs included elements that are still popular in today's best MMO games. You could collect loot, level up, team up with others, and join guilds. As computer technology improved, developers started adding graphics. Players could now see the environment, click on items to interact with them, and watch what happened.

This led to the development of commercial graphical multiplayer games like Neverwinter Nights (1991). And later early MMO games, like Ultima Online (1997) and EverQuest (1999). The success and the active player base and guilds of these 'old' MMO games, paved the way for the release of modern titles like World of Warcraft (2004) and MMO adaptations of existing titles, like The Elder Scrolls Online (2014).

What was the first MMO game?

The answer depends on how you define MMO. The Essex MUD, or MUD1, was a multiplayer game, but it was not a 'true' MMO. The available technology at the time only allowed for small numbers of players to join.

The game also doesn't look like something a modern player might associate with an MMO virtual world. Island of Kesmai (1985) was the first multiplayer online game to add graphics, but this is still not considered to be an MMO game.

Meridian 59 is often thought of as the first true, 3D MMO game. It appeared in 1996, and was quickly followed by the more widely known Ultima Online, which was the first blockbuster MMO.

What's the difference between Multiplayer and MMO Games?

The main difference between Multiplayer and MMO games is the number of people playing together at once. Both types of games can be played with others. However, multiplayer games usually have fewer players in one session or match. For example, playing with 2-16 people in a (private) room online.

Multiplayer games can also be played locally. Think of a 2-player match, with two friends using one computer and sharing the keyboard. Or playing with a friend by using a game console at home.

MMO games are also multiplayer games. But as the name suggests, their virtual worlds allow a much larger number of players to roam a huge, shared world at once. Players have their own characters, and you can interact with them, exchange items, join guilds, and adventure together.
