How to Play: The Rules of Mahjong Solitaire

Learning how to play is easy! The main goal is to clear all the mahjong tiles from the board. To clear away the tiles, you have to find the matching pairs. Look for two tiles that have the same picture, and click on them to make them disappear. 

There are two other rules to bear in mind though:

• The "Playable Tile” Rule: Not all tiles can be used right away. You can only pick a tile if it is “playable.” A tile can only be used if it has no other tiles on top of it. It must also be able to slide out on at least one side (left or right).
• Special Tiles: Mahjong tile sets also feature a number of special tiles, such as the ”Flower" or "Season". These are special because they can be matched with any other tile in the same category, even if the pictures are not exactly the same.

Traditional Mahjong vs. Online Mahjong Solitaire

When people talk about mahjong, they often mean two different things. Traditional Chinese Mahjong is a social game for four players. It is a bit like the card game Rummy, where players use mahjong tiles to build sets. Traditional mahjong is sometimes also called “Real Mahjong”, because this is the original game on which online versions are based.

However, on this page, we focus on mahjong solitaire games. This is a single-player version of the game. Instead of playing against other people, you solve a puzzle by yourself. Most mahjong games you find online are mahjong solitaire games. It doesn’t resemble traditional mahjong much, other than that it uses the same tiles. 

This type of single-player mahjong game is a very popular online because you can go at your own pace. It can be played with the traditional Chinese tiles, but can also be adapted to suit a certain theme by putting different symbols or pictures on the tiles.

Mahjong Solitaire vs. Mahjong Connect

When it comes to online mahjong games, there are two main styles you are likely to come across:

1. Mahjong Solitaire Style: The tiles are stacked in layers. You must clear them from the sides and the top layers first. A great example of this is Mahjong Titans Classic.
2. Mahjong Connect Style: The tiles are usually placed on the board in one flat layer. To remove the tiles, connect matching pairs with a line. However, this line cannot make more than two 90-degree turns. If you like this style, try MahJongCon.
