If you’ve got some rhubarb left over in your fridge from the summer, Sara’s got just the recipe for you. Rhubarb Pie: Sara’s Cooking Class is a fun cooking game with a real recipe for a delicious traditional rhubarb pie.
You’ll be making the whole pie from scratch, from the sweet pie crust to the rhubarb and strawberry filling. The recipe is included in the game. So if you’ve had enough practice playing online, you can try baking this pie at home, too!
Today, Sara is sharing one of her favourite pie recipes. Follow the easy steps to learn how to make an old-fashioned rhubarb pie. The ingredients are already set out on the counter for you. Pick up the bowls and utensils to mix and knead the ingredients.
Tap the bowls and utensils and drag them to the right place. Then, tap again to pour, scoop, or stir the ingredients. At the top of the screen, you’ll see a picture of the item you need to use next. Find it on the counter. Can you figure out what you need to do with it?
First, add the ingredients to the bowl to make the dough. Once the ingredients are mixed, add the ice water. Using ice-cold water will help keep the fat from the vegetable shortening solid while you roll out the dough. This helps give the pie crust a flaky, crispy texture.
While the dough is chilled in the fridge, you can make the pie filling. Mix the chopped rhubarb and strawberries with white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Tip: There’s a lot of juicy fruit in this pie. Stir in a bit of cornstarch to thicken up the pie filling. This will keep the pie from going runny in the oven.
Roll out the chilled dough and line the pie dish. Set aside some dough to cover the top of the pie. Trim off any dough that’s sticking out over the edge. You can add it to the dough set aside to decorate the top of the pie.
Scoop the filling into the pie, and cover the top with strips of dough. You can coat these with a mixture of egg and water to give the pie a beautiful glaze.
Pop the pie into the over and watch the temperature. You’ll have to turn the temperature down a bit partway through. When the pie is done, place it on a wire rack to cool before slicing the pie and serving it.
Wow, that traditional rhubarb pie looks amazing with its latticed pie crust and bright pink filling. Serve it with some whipped cream or ice cream as a finishing touch.
