Dodging Blockades and Eating Apples

Some may think that Snake - preloaded on the 1998 Nokia mobile phones - is the original snake game. But the genre is much older than that.

The game concept for Snake first appeared in the mid-1970s with games like the two-player arcade title Blockade (1976). In this game, two players move a pip around the screen leaving a 'tail' that forms a wall. The goal is to drive the other player to crash into this wall.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the game was adapted for home computers. Single-player versions like Snake Byte (1982) appeared, in which the player controls a snake that eats apples. This makes the snake grow longer. The objective is to keep eating apples without letting the snake bump into its own body or tail.

A New Generation of Online Snake Games

The Nokia snake game caused a popular revival, but the genre also took on new forms with the rapid increase of free online browser games. Many more clones of the classic apple-collecting concept quickly popped up online.

New opportunities for multiplayer features also brought a new type of Snake game, the .io snake game. This arena-based multiplayer Snake concept combines elements of both Blockade and Snake Byte.

Players can slither around an arena collecting fruit, glowing dots, and other items to grow bigger. At the same time, the tail of each snake or worm also forms a kind of wall. When other players bump into this wall they lose the game. Any remaining players can then eat them to grow even bigger.

Examples of the .io Snake genre include WormsZone and Happy Snakes. Check them out, or try one of the games listed below.
